Some say that because of social media, the world is becoming smaller. But can it become better?
Nowadays, who doesn't have a social media "friend" on the other side of the world. We can share "likes" and interests, photos and perspectives. But is it enough to stop terrorism, end racism, and generate genuine compassion and understanding?
This might depend on the quality of relationships formed. But can you develop REAL friendships through social media?
This is the question my social media instructor, Joseph Ranseth, decided to explore. He decided to take on this question by driving across the continent, from Pheonix, Arizona, to Toronto, Ontario. On this trip, he would endeavour to meet face to face as many of the people he had only ever known through social media.
You can read more about his adventures here: http://socialmediaadventure.com/
At one point, on a particularly long drive, his co-driver was asleep, and he himself was feeling very sleepy. He sent a tweet asking people to text his phone in order to keep him awake. The constant buzz from his phone effectively kept him awake. From around the world, he was receiving advice, jokes and words of encouragement. They responded to help in what way they could, with a proficiency that one's childhood bosom buddy is not always able to do.
It is fair to say you can make great friends over social media.
But will it make the world a better place?
For that, social media can only be successful if it leaves social media.
CHALLENGE:
Do you have a Facebook Friend or LinkedIn connection in your same town whom you have never met? Invite them out for coffee.
